Direct Access Scheme (DAS)
Your Path to Riding Large Motorcycles
Explore the Thrill of Higher Power Bikes Safely and Confidently

Course Overview
The Direct Access Scheme offers two distinct routes to riding a more powerful motorcycle, based on your age and preference.
You can choose the medium powered motorcycle route under the ‘category A2’ licence or go for the unrestricted full licence ‘category A’ DAS course. If you are old enough we highly recommend the full category A route.
We take away all the pressure and worries of training and testing and guide you effortlessly and methodically through each stage of training. This ensures you’re fully ready for your motorcycle journey with zero stress or anxiety.
Who’s It For?
The DAS course is for riders who want to ride larger motorcycles. There are some restrictions (see below) but in essence this is for older riders (over 24 years old) who want to ride a motorcycle for various reasons.
If you want to experience the freedom of the open road, use the motorcycle as a means of relaxation and a getaway from the stresses that life often brings. This route has so many benefits for those who partake in this fantastic hobby/pastime.
If you can see yourself riding off into the sunset or touring abroad on a big adventure, the Direct Access (DAS) is the perfect starting point for you.
As a rider under the age of 24 it gives you the thrill of the bigger motorbike but without the full power. This is known as the A2 licence route (see below).
19-23 Years Old - Category A2 Licence:
- For riders in this age group.
- The focus is on medium powered motorcycles (25-33kW or 33-47bhp).
- Training is typically conducted on 250-650cc machines.
- It has a two-year experience period post test to ensure skill development.
Over 24 Years Old - Category A Licence:
- This route leads directly to unrestricted motorcycle riding.
- Training and tests are conducted on motorcycles of at least 600cc.
- Allowing you to handle a full range of bikes after passing both tests.
- Known as Direct Access Scheme (DAS)
What To Expect
Post-CBT training often begins on a 125cc motorcycle, this depends on your previous experience and ability. This transition period develops your knowledge and practical skills to progress to a larger machine.
When you start your test preparation each training day is broken down into two distinct sections. We prepare you for both the Mod 1 and Mod 2 tests, this means you progress rapidly and have a full training and riding experience.
Off-Road Manoeuvres – Mod 1 motorcycle test training
Gain step by step guidance on all aspects of the Module One test, including crucial slow control and higher speed exercise skills.
On-Road Training – Mod 2 motorcycle test training
Prepare for the Module Two test with extensive on-road riding sessions, where you’ll learn to handle different traffic conditions and road types. Your training will cover busy town centres to quiet country lanes.

Beyond Passing The Test - Next Steps After Completion
With your DAS completed, you’re equipped to handle a full range of motorcycles, opening a new realm of riding experiences and adventures.
You can now ride unaccompanied without L Plates on a larger motorcycle, carry a passenger and go on the motorway (although they are pretty boring and square off your tyres).
Our advice is to get used to your new motorcycle for a short period of time and then progress to some advanced rider training. Advanced doesn’t mean an extremely high level that’s unobtainable, it means advancing your skills from where you are right now to become a more skilled rider.
You can also start to think about bigger adventures, like riding around the UK on short weekend breaks or joining us on a European Riding Tour. We will hold your hand for the duration of the trip and ensure you don’t have any problems. We take away all the stress of riding abroad for the first time, giving you time to enjoy the experience.
NB. Explanation Notes for Accelerated Access
The two-year experience period after obtaining an A2 licence is a qualifying phase. It allows you to upgrade to a full powered Category A motorcycle licence after this period, without waiting until you are 24 years old.

What Our Customers Say

Just a quick note to thank you for the professionalism of your organisation. At every stage I have been supported by yourself and the team who all have their own unique individual style of training and which was tailored to my exact requirements. Thanks to everyone’s tireless enthusiasm and training skills I achieved everything I set out to do.
As I said on day one, having had one bad experience with another school, it is so difficult to select and entrust your faith in the right school, with the confidence that they will teach you the right and safe way to ride.
I guess your biggest challenge moving forward is how the man in the street finds a path way to your door for the best training – I will certainly be making it my business to tell anyone who will listen about the tremendous experience I have had with RMT.
Thank youDerek
